PsychologyQRThe Course

Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behaviour. The course looks at the way people think, act, react, and interact by analysing thoughts and emotions. Studying this subject will give you an insight into how you think and why you do the things you do.

The first year will cover your interaction with others in society, your formation of attachments, your memory system and how it can be improved. We will also look at psychopathology and the development of psychological issues with a specific focus on phobias, depression and OCD. In the second year there are a range of options including the study of schizophrenia, forensics, aggression, addiction, cognition, relationships, stress, gender and eating behaviour.

The qualification is an engaging and effective introduction to psychology through critical analysis, independent thinking and research. Many students pick the subject out of curiosity and find themselves fascinated by the work.

If you are interested in people and inquisitive about their behaviour, this is the subject for you. A better understanding of other human beings has been to proven to reduce sexism, racism, homophobia and other prejudices. Psychologists affect people‚Äôs attitudes towards others which can help make the world a better place.

Assessment

There are three two hours exams which are a mixture of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing.

Entry Requirements

GCSE Biology grade 6 or Trilogy Science grade 66
GCSE English Language grade 6
GCSE Maths grade 5

Careers & Higher Education

A psychology degree is a great starting point for a career in both science and the arts, as it equips you with a range of skills and opens opportunities with a variety of employers. Previous students have become professional psychologists, psychiatrists and many other related fields.

The application of a reasoned approach, problem solving and manipulation of data, provide useful tools for careers in healthcare, law enforcement, finance, IT and research. Knowledge of human behaviour and motivation is well suited to careers in the creative industries, the legal sector, government administration, education, commercial and industrial companies, financial organisations, human resources, marketing companies, the media, the NHS, police forces, prisons and social services and so the list goes on!
