FilmStudiesQRThe Course

Film is significantly more than a trip to the cinema or an evening in, watching the latest release on Netflix or Prime. The films we watch and enjoy, give us a window in to historical events, culture and changes in society from the early 20th Century, right up to present day.

As one of the most major art forms of the 21st Century, this course provides an in-depth understanding and enjoyment of a variety of films through practical work, analysis and the study of critical approaches to film. What are the motivations behind the most prominent film makers and most influential films over the last century? Are films just made for an audience’s enjoyment? How is a film made? These questions will all be answered through your studies.

Film Studies will provide you with a critical insight into everything ‘film’. A wide and diverse range of films are studied chosen from the industry including Hollywood blockbusters, British Independent Cinema and World Film. Historical and contemporary films are explored and analysed. Example texts include the Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, the British Zombie comedy Shaun of The Dead, Del Torro’s Spanish masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth and the Oscar winning La La Land. In addition to the cultural and critical insight gained through your study of the products, you will have the opportunity to produce, edit and direct your own productions in our dedicated Media Suite which offers Sony Vegas and Photoshop, both of which are used in the industry.
