HumanBiologyQRBTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Human Applied Biology

The Course - Equivalent to 1 A level

The study of human biology is fascinating: from the detailed working of our cells to how microorganisms cause disease and how we can battle these invisible enemies.

This is a Level 3 BTEC National qualification and as such poses the same degree of intellectual challenge as A-Level Biology. It is fundamentally different however in the way that it is examined. There is are 2 exams, taken in January and June of Year 13 and 2 coursework assessed units which run in parallel with the examined part. Our BTEC National in Applied Human Biology is a great choice for students looking for a career where they can make a difference to the health and lives of others. The course gives students a broad understanding of biological principles including cells, tissues, biological molecules, genetics, immunology and practical microbiology as well as diseases, diagnostic techniques and treatments.

The qualification benefits from:
Progression routes: students can progress to an apprenticeship, higher education (when taken alongside other Level 3 qualifications) or go directly to employment.
Practical learning: students will explore a variety of tests and techniques using essential laboratory practice.
Flexible learning: students can move from the Certificate (AS equivalent size) to the Extended Certificate (A level equivalent size), and vice versa.
Our small teaching groups allow for an incredible amount of individualised teaching and help.

Unit 1 – Principles of Human Biology is a mandatory, examined unit.
Unit 2 - Practical Microbiology and Infectious Disease is an assignment-based unit.
The Extended certificate requires these two mandatory units plus one more mandatory unit – Human Biology and Health Issues and another one we will choose.
The four units make up the Extended Certificate which is equivalent to a full A-Level.
