Dear Parents and Students,

You will have heard, no doubt, that the final decisions about how grades will be awarded this summer have been made by Ofqual and the Department for Education.

I intend to send you a video message shortly, detailing exactly what this means for you, however, I still need to have some further discussions with colleagues in other schools before I can do this. In the meantime, below are three really important key messages:

  1. At some point in May, we will be holding internal exams for the majority of subjects. These exams will be similar in style to what students would have sat in a normal year, but will only cover topics we have properly taught.

  2. The final, overall grade will be based on how students do in these exams along with any additional evidence that we have. What this evidence is will vary from subject to subject, but for example, may include NEAs, in-class assessments (such as topic tests), classwork or even work completed at home.

  3. To ensure absolute fairness there are a number of measures in place:
  1. All schools have to follow the same guidance.

  2. Schools will be checked to ensure they are basing their decisions on the evidence they have.

  3. Students' work will be marked by their teacher, other teachers in school and even teachers from other schools to ensure the marks are accurate.

  4. For any internal exams, it is likely that students will just enter their candidate number rather than their name, so that teachers don't know whose paper they are marking.

  5. All the teachers, and I, as Head of the School, will sign declarations to say that we have treated students fairly and based our decisions on the evidence we have.

As I say, I will send you a video message soon with more details.

Students now have just over 3 weeks in school before Easter. Over the Easter holidays we will be offering some revision and coursework sessions. After Easter there will be 3 or 4 weeks before the internal exams start. This gives us time to collect as much evidence as we need to ensure students get the grades they deserve. Students: please make every lesson count and help us to help you.

Kind regards,

Alex Lingard
