If you have ever wanted to help someone with a disability and feel that you would like to make a real impact on their lives then now’s your chance to do that, read on.

The Echo Centre is looking for volunteers in a variety of disciplines, the following are just suggestions and you may think of more.

  • If you are creative, like making cards or something else to do with craftwork, then this might be an opportunity to share your talents.
  • If you are artistic then you could start up a class in the medium that interests you the most.
  • Acting is another aspect that they could enjoy and you could involve others in helping to construct any scenery or making costumes etc. for a performance somewhere.
  • Computing is an area where you can help either with individuals at the machines or behind the scene sorting out what software might be useful
  • The engineers and designers amongst you might like to find out if there are any apparatus or gadgets that you could construct to make life easier
  • If none of the above inspire you but you are willing to turn your hand to anything for a challenge then this could be the opportunity for you, go along and see what they need.

Each day the Echo Centre provides activities for people to try. This is where you can help as the stimulus of new people has a positive effect in itself. Their younger clients come in on Tuesdays and they would benefit from mixing with people of their own age. Helping them make progress and motivating them to try new activities would be useful for their own personal rehabilitation.

You would begin by going in and meeting the people that you would work with then you could devise an activity that they could do under your supervision, with help from others on your team. Whatever project you plan could take place over several weeks and everyone could take it in turns to plan something whilst being supported by others in the group, that way everyone can share the responsibility and take their turn in leading others.

The Echo Centre is within 5 minutes walking distance of the school so there will not be any transport problems.
