Dance is becoming a very popular art form with its own history, body of knowledge, aesthetic values and cultural context which draw on a variety of stimuli and other art forms to enhance the creative process.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

No prior qualification is required but it is preferable that pupils have a grade C or above at GCSE.  Many of our students dance outside the context of the school curriculum. Therefore this course would be suitable for candidates from any dance background who have a real passion for the subject and wish to study dance in depth.

 

COURSE DETAILS (AQA)

The AS comprises of two teaching and learning modules and the A2 comprises a further teaching and learning modules.

Year 12 AS

Unit 1 WRITTEN EXAMINATION: UNDERSTANDING DANCE (1 hr 30 mins)  
40% of the total AS marks                          20% of the total A Level marks

This unit focuses on building on the existing knowledge and understanding you already have and looking at the anatomy of a dancers body, different styles and techniques, performance skills as well as the craft of choreography. You will also get to investigate a variety of world leading professional works which will inspire your choreography and support your dance knowledge.

Unit 2 PRACTICAL COURSEWORK: SOLO CHOREOGRAPHY AND PERFORMANCE; PERFORMANCE IN A DUO/GROUP.
60% of the total AS marks                 30% of the total A Level marks

Pupils are required to produce two dance piences. One solo piece where they can express their own unique style in response to a stimulus and another where they focus on performance creating a duo/trio of their choice.

Year 13 A2

Unit 3 WRITTEN EXAMINATION: APPRECIATION: CONTENT AND CONTEXT (1 hr 30 mins)

You will gain an in depth knowledge of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and experience works from the international African American modern dance group. As well as this you will analyse and appreciate the professional work Zero Degrees by Akram Khan studying the movement, dancers, setting and accompaniment used in the work.
25% of the total A Level marks

Unit 4         PRACTICAL EXAMINATION: GROUP CHOREOGRAPHY AND SOLO PERFORMANCE
25% of the total A Level marks

Pupils will be able to create their own unique group Choreography allowing them to experiment with their own movement ideas and apply their own choreographic devices. As well as this they will have the opportunity to create a solo performance in the style on one of the practitioners they study in Unit 3.
