Pupils following the AS and A2 course are expected to gain a B grade or above in Science (Biology) and Maths GCSE.

This brand new course offers a rigorous and interesting approach to studying Biology. Pupils will have the option of sitting an AS exam at the end of year 12; this will consist of paper 1 Breadth in Biology (50%) and paper 2 Depth in Biology (50%). The papers will cover a range of theory and practical skills including Foundations in Biology, Exchange and Transport, Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease as well as a Development of Practical Skills module. If pupils decide to continue through to gain an A level they will study all of the AS modules plus Communication, Homeostasis and Energy along with Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems which will be assessed in three papers. Paper 1 Biological Processes (37%), paper 2 Biological Diversity (37%) and paper 3 (26%). Both AS and A level courses will be subject to a pass/fail practical skills endorsement on their certificate which is internally assessed.



AS Biology is an inherently interesting course that will stimulate and challenge any scientific mind, it is an excellent qualification; valuable for progression into medical and veterinary science as well as pharmaceutical research and essential for progression into biochemistry, ecology, pure and applied biological sciences, microbiology and environmental biology to name a few. It also provides a robust example that you are capable of in depth study in a wide range of fascinating areas of biology providing you with a wealth of transferable skills, an AS biology qualification shows that you are dedicated, determined, creative and able to connect ideas and key concepts. It is a captivating and fast paced course packed full with remarkable content that you will take with you whatever your chosen career path.



Vet, microbiologist, cancer research scientist, GP, physiotherapist, ophthalmic optician, occupational therapist, nurse, teacher, environmental consultant and fisheries officer are just a few job titles of some of the pupils that recently chose to study Biology at Liskeard School.  They all say that at times it was difficult but they now have fulfilling careers and feel rewarded for their hard work
