The Liskeard and South East Cornwall Breather's Group is a charity supporting sufferers of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) - a chronic lung disease that causes severe breathing difficulties. The group have been a long supporter of the school giving annual talks to students about the importance of not smoking. Their impact has been amazing with the proportion of young smokers falling dramatically over the last 5 years.

Liskeard School and Community College’s Arts Faculty travelled to London for the annual visit to some of the country’s top galleries and theatres. Thirty students travelled by train, bound for two incredibly full days of exploration, including Harrods, The Mal, The National and Portrait Gallery, School of Rock at The New London Theatre, The Tate Modern, a boat trip on the Thames and shopping in Covent Garden.

Liskeard Sixth Form student Luke Moynan, along with two other members of the Youth Parliament in Cornwall and constituents from each part of the UK, travelled to London to discuss key issues affecting young people.  Four major issues were discussed, debated and voted on including student transport, the voting age, curriculum for life and work experience hubs. The youth parliament had to vote on which two issues to campaign for from January next year, resulting in a campaign for lowering the voting age and imposing a ‘curriculum for life’.

Students and staff at Liskeard School & Community College were delighted to welcome back the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir. The Pearl of Africa Child Care charity was set up to improve the health, education and welfare of children in Uganda.

The visit consisted of interactive workshops for students during the day, allowing students to dance, sing and play instruments under the guidance of the choir. This included interactive demonstrations on African singing, dancing and drumming, a questions and answers session and an opportunity to really get involved with African culture.

Liskeard Sixth Form debating team had the opportunity to put their skills to the test at a regional forum of the European Youth Parliament in Exeter, alongside other schools from the South West. Students were given issues to research and resolutions to explore leading up to the event and there was an opportunity for all team members to participate and give speeches in the debates, as well as voicing their own opinions. Much to the team’s delight, Liskeard won the competition and advanced to the Nationals.
