Liskeard School & Community College’s ‘Young Enterprise’ group have lived up to the bar set by last year’s team and have been awarded for their business skills and resilience., a Young Enterprise Company, were awarded the ‘Best Use of IT’ at the Cornwall Young Enterprise Final at County Hall.

The year has seen a group of Year 10 students set up and run their own business, as part of the Young Enterprise Company Programme. The students involved decided they wanted something that would make their lives more convenient, but also something that had a clear link to Cornwall. As a result, they designed a pasty style cable tidy that would save wires, such as headphones or USB chargers, from tangling.

For the last year the group have had weekly board meetings, carried out market research and used school equipment to create their products.

This work led to the Final Awards where the team pitched their product to a panel of judges from Young Enterprise, who were so impressed that they crowned the team with the ‘Best Use of IT’ award. The judges cited the team’s use of software and machinery in creating their product as the main reason for this, as well as their use of social media and their prototype website.

The final pitch, held in the council chambers at County Hall, Truro, was a very accurate reflection of the journey they have been on this year. The team do not mind sharing that their first practice run was a bit of a disaster!

However, showing their resilience and commitment to improve, the presenting team went away, reflected on the practice and spent the next few hours improving and refining their pitch. The end result was a very professional and informative pitch that impressed the judges.

Business Teacher and Programme Leader at the school, Nathan Aird praised the team’s resilience and hard work.

“This year has been a difficult one for Liskeard’s Young Enterprise team through no fault of their own. Despite this, they have shown great resilience by attending meetings every week and showing determination to ensure they had a product, and have benefited fully from the programme.

“The team should be very proud of the work they have put in this year and what they have achieved from it,” he said. are now selling their products to students at the school and the general public. The school hope to offer the programme again next year for any budding future entrepreneurs!
