Year 9 students from Liskeard School & Community College got hands on with a range of scientific equipment at the Medical Mavericks workshop at City College Plymouth, helping them to explore a potential future in science.

Students in attendance had been chosen as they are considering a career in medicine, and the workshop was the perfect opportunity to provide them with information and inspiration through engaging, practical activities.

These activities ranged from using medical equipment to measure the students' blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, peak flow breathing, core body temperature and pulse rate, to more medical practice type tasks such as drawing blood from an artificial arm, intubating 'Eddy the head' or using the keyhole surgery simulator.

Mr. Andrew Davis, Science Teacher at Liskeard School & Community College, said the students relished the experience.

“There were a range of schools from the area in attendance and our students really shone in so many ways. They really enjoyed the variety of experiences and maybe we have inspired the next generation of GPs, surgeons, radiographers, anaesthetists and paramedics from Liskeard!” he said.
