Year 10 Music Students have enjoyed an outstanding opportunity to participate in a composition workshop, which is fully subsidised by arts/heritage funding, thanks to Mayes Creative who have organised the opportunity.

Jake McMurchie and Mark Whitlam, who came in to work with our students, are very experienced musicians and composers. Jake is a saxophonist with well-known band Get The Blessing and Mark is a music tutor at BIMM Bristol, a renowned music college, and we are very lucky to have them involved in the project.

Mark and Jake ran a workshop based around the work they are doing as part of the Deep Space project at Sterts Theatre, working with Lois Taylor to produce dance, music and live visuals around the theme of Cosmic Rays (deep space particles).

Students spent the day working on the concept of Minimalism. They began by working as a whole class ensemble, clapping rhythms by sub-dividing beats into quavers, semi-quavers and triplet metres. The concept of Minimalism was then introduced and the class were divided into smaller groups.

Each group then chose a very simple musical motif which was developed using the many compositional techniques used within this genre of music. Groups then rehearsed and performed their Minimalist piece, with some volunteering to be recorded. These samples will be used during the DEEP SPACE Project at Sterts Theatre later on in the year. DEEP SPACE takes place at Sterts Theatre, Upton Cross, on Saturday 21st April, tickets are £4, £6 and £8 and are available from 01579 362382 or via work forms part of the Dark Skies: Bright Stars Project from Mayes Creative, funded by Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund and FEAST Cornwall, with kind support from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, LUX, Cinestar, Sterts Arts and Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd.

Mr Bond, Joint Head of Music, was delighted with how the session went.

“This was a fantastic opportunity to work with professional musicians, studying a concept completely new to the students. The idea of Minimalist music could be developed by the students and used towards their free Composition coursework. The students represented the school with merit, and our visiting musicians were very impressed by the musicianship displayed during the workshop,” he said.
