Once again the Science Department at Liskeard School and Community College made sure that National Science and Engineering week went off with a bang.

Following a week of scientific learning and exploration, the icing on the cake was the school’s annual Science show which was attended by more than 200 people, from school and the wider community.

Mr Inger and Mr Trudgett showed off some of their favourite demonstrations, including making raspberry ice cream using liquid nitrogen, sitting Mr Trudgett on a bed of nails, experimenting with luminol and clock reactions as well as a live dissection of a bull's heart.

Earlier in the week, Year 4 and 5 students from the school’s partner primary schools were invited to join the whole of Year 7 to watch Mr Inger and Mr Trudgett demonstrate some of the key principles relating to particles and energy using liquid nitrogen.  Students were absolutely buzzing and left the show with some fantastic questions.

Throughout the week, students in years 7, 8 and 9 took part in the school’s first Science Fair competition; here students were able to work completely on their own to investigate a subject of their choice – the Science Department have had some amazing entries which have involved everything from electrolysing water at home to finding the best method for making lead skeletons.

The students who took part have shown a real passion and enthusiasm for the scientific method. Key Stage Three students have also enjoyed some special lessons to celebrate science week where they have been investigating timers and the best recipe for bubble mixture - all whilst focussing on scientific enquiry.

Ten lucky students also took part in a Physics and Drama STEM workshop at Exeter University; Mr Davis went with these students to learn about the life of Lise Meitner - students found it especially interesting to consider how difficult it would have been to be a female Physicist in 1939; they learned important and inspiring lessons about her work and her incredible resilience.

It is fair to say that we love science at Liskeard school and we are looking forward to more events in the summer term!
