Year 7 students at Liskeard School & Community College were treated to a whole day off timetable this past week, spending the day looking into the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

During the day, students worked together in small groups of 4 or 5 to tackle a series of activities around the theme of ‘energy’. The first challenge was to design, make and test a wind turbine against the clock. This was followed by a challenge to design and make a drag car to see how far it could travel on a single burst of energy.

The final challenge of the day got pupils thinking about one of the most urgent real-world challenges of our time: the future of energy. Students brainstormed their own innovative and, in some cases, wild ideas about how and where we will harvest energy in the year 2028 – the year they will turn 21.

Technology teacher, Ms Yoxall, was particularly impressed with one group of students who have been awarded as joint Technology Student of the Week and been invited to join the Green Power Challenge Club.

Ms Yoxall commented that, “The boys, Isaac Chapman, Lewis Young, Ryan Mee, Alfie and Ewan Ball, proved to be an amazing Engineering-minded team, working exceptionally well together to plan, test and develop - through improved prototypes - a great solution. It was praised by the visiting presenter for being the best performing wind generator that that they have seen since they had started the running the challenge!”

Headteacher, Alex Lingard, said "The world of STEM is an ever changing landscape, but offers so many opportunities for future careers. This event has been brilliant and it was wonderful to see the students so engaged."

We are hugely grateful to the Education Business Partnership for organising the event.
