Students and staff at Liskeard School & Community College were delighted to welcome back the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir. The Pearl of Africa Child Care charity was set up to improve the health, education and welfare of children in Uganda.
The visit consisted of interactive workshops for students during the day, allowing students to dance, sing and play instruments under the guidance of the choir. This included interactive demonstrations on African singing, dancing and drumming, a questions and answers session and an opportunity to really get involved with African culture.
The school and wider community was then treated to a spectacular performance of music and dance as a packed Old Hall got into the African spirit. The performance consisted of amazing drumming, colourful outfits and perfect vocals. The performers showed astonishing energy and enthusiasm, and wore infectious smiles throughout. The short interval allowed the audience to buy items hand made by children in Uganda, and catch their breath! The second half of the show allowed the audience to get involved and learn some new dance moves.
Head Teacher Alex Lingard said “It was a delight and a privilege to welcome the Pearl of Africa choir back to Liskeard. They were as vibrant and mesmerising as ever. The students loved the drumming, dancing and singing workshops throughout the day and the evening concert was a joy to behold. It was a very positive experience for our students giving them an insight not only to Ugandan culture, but also to the fabulous work of the charity that enables homeless children to access education, shelter, medication and food. With the non-uniform day donations and concert ticket sales we have raised over £1600 for the charity.”
