Dear Parents/Carers,

Just after 7pm last night the Department for Education released further guidance with regards to the return of students to school. I thought it would be useful to update you with the situation and our plans moving forward.

The key paragraph in the guidance relating to secondary schools is as follows:

'From 1 June 2020, we expect that secondary schools and colleges will be able to offer some face to face contact with year 10 and year 12 pupils. This will not be a return to full timetables or pupils back in school or college full time, rather some support to supplement pupils’ remote education.'

As always, our priority will be the health and safety of students, staff and families. Over the next two weeks we will be contacting parents of students in Years 10 and 12 about returning to school:

  • We will be informing you of the procedures we will be putting in place to minimise risk to students, staff and families.

  • We will advise you on our expectations with regards to student behaviour, including adherence to the social distance and personal hygiene requirements, and the consequences should they not be followed.

  • It is still the case that children are safest remaining at home, so we will be asking you how well you believe your child is coping with home learning and if you will be prepared to send your child to school.

  • If you are prepared to send in your child, we will check you have a safe method of transport to and from school.

As soon as we know how many children require places, we will be creating a rota for when students should attend school and creating a timetable that is manageable with the staff we have available. We will attempt to provide every year 10 and year 12 student with at least one face to face day before the summer holiday, but please bear in mind that we also need to continue to provide schooling for children of keyworkers and those considered vulnerable, as well as providing home learning to all students. In other words, we will be severely restricted to the amount of face to face schooling we will be able to provide. We will offer as much provision as it is safe to do so for as many students as possible, but we will need to prioritise those in most need.

I'm sure you will have many questions and I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. Our communication with you over the next two weeks should answer any questions you have, but as always, please let us know if you have any urgent concerns.

For parents/carers of students in Y10 & Y12, please look out for a follow-up email in the next couple of days.

For parents/carers of students in other year groups, we will continue our regular communication with you about home learning and provide an update of our expectations and plans between now and the summer holidays.

Regards,

Alex Lingard
